Helderberg Classics Festival
22 November 2003
- Somerset College,
Classic wine, food, art and music will delight your palate at the Helderberg Wine Route and Nedbank Private Banking Classics Festival on Saturday, 22 November 2003 at Somerset College in Somerset West.
Some of the best wines in the country will be up for tasting, buying and auctioneering. Delectable food such as oysters, olives, biltong and cheese will whet the appetite, local artists will set the mood with an art exhibition and finally the strings of the DNA Strings and the voices of the Abaqondisi Brothers will set the stage for the finale - a performance by the Soweto String Quartet, or SSQ.
The SSQ
The SSQ is world renown and has performed the world over, such as the UK, New Zealand, Glasgow, Washington, New York City and Edinburgh. They have also delighted the rich and famous with their music, such as former president Nelson Mandela, Quincy Jones, Naomi Campbell, Mia Farrow and 62 Commonwealth Heads of State including Prince Charles.
The Soweto String Quartet has celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Carnival City Casino on Saturday 13 September 2003, just after their latest album, "Our World" was released on Monday 8 September 2003.
The wines
The Helderberg region has consistently produced wines of exceptional quality. The forthcoming John Platter Guide has awarded a five star rating to eight wines from this region out of a total of seventeen Five Star wines. Vergelegen has no less than four Five Star wines, Rust en Vrede has two Five Star wines and Cordoba and Ken Forrester Wines each has one Five Star wine.
Apart from tasting wines from 21 estates from the Helderberg region, wines will be for sale and a highlight will be the auctioneering of Jeroboam (3 litre) wines from the Helderberg Wine Route Estates. The auctioneer is none other than Ken Forrester, from Ken Forrester Wines - a member of the Helderberg Wine Route. Ken has a keen interest in auctioneering and has auctioned 'just about everything' at more than 200 charity and school auctions.
Children
Children are welcome and while mom and dad taste wine, there will be entertainment for children from age two to age seventeen from 1400 until 1700. Jimmy's Jungle will entertain the toddlers, while the older children will play games with Telegames and Computer Zone.
Concert
The twilight concert will start at 1730 and guests are advised to bring chairs and blankets, as the concert will take place on the college cricket fields. The cost is R80 per adult, R65 per pensioner and R25 per child and it includes the tasting of wine and food as well as the twilight concert.
